Memories

On the third day of Nissan, every year, the emphasis of our candle lighting weekly broadcast slightly changes. Last year, our focus was on the gift of blessing – the blessing that comes down when we use our G-d given talents to serve others and when we see and embrace the uniqueness inherent in others. The year before that, we focused on connecting with love – love for Hashem, His Torah and Mitzvot, for each other and for Eretz Yisrael.

This year, our emphasis will be on the power of our memories. As individuals, and also as a people, our memories have the power to shape us – to influence our current reality, and to set us on our path towards our future. In other words, our history – shared or not, determines our future.

Although our negative memories have a part in making us who we are, and can be learned from as well, we will focus on our positive memories and how they spark in us a desire to be the best version of ourselves – individually and as a people.

The ‘Connecting through Candle Lighting’ project and broadcast is dedicated to the memory of Liba Gutnick, whose Yartzeit is on the third day of Nissan. She is remembered by friends and family as a loving and beloved young girl who spread light and love to all those she came into contact with.
